Christian Costa was born in Warsaw and now lives between Naples & Warsaw. He has produced artworks for public art projects at locations across Europe; including Palermo, Naples, Florence, Liverpool, Prague, Gdansk and Birmingham. He is a published writer and reader of several European languages.

Costa is currently carrying out a public art residency and exhibition, entitled ‘Post Industrial Revolution’ @ The Lombard Method, Birmingham. He works with installation, sound and photography; exploring the relationship between identity, memory and physical space. <img src="http://payload11.cargocollective.com/1/4/148023/2526177/droppedImage.jpg" border="0" width="388" height="292" width_o="388" height_o="292" src_o="http://payload11.cargocollective.com/1/4/148023/2526177/droppedImage_o.jpg" align="left" />

Christian’s work focuses on a relational approach; ‘In my opinion there can’t be any public art intervention without a deep understanding of the context and a strong contact and negotiation with the people which live in the area.’
Christian is interested in possible comparisons between some of the Italian projects that he is involved in and contemporary UK based political, social and cultural climate: ‘There could be a Berlusconi hidden in every European politician and people are still not very aware of it!’

The Cooperative is an official 2010 Liverpool Biennial venue. Located at the 'Old Rapid Paint Shop’ on Renshaw Street, this venue represents the collaborative organisational efforts of a mixture of Liverpool’s most exciting creative collectives. The project is co-ordinated by our friends at Mercy (www.mercyonline.co.uk) and promises to provide Liverpool with a whole host of creative excellence throughout the duration of the Biennial.

CAAPO has been invited to inhabit this old commercial venue for a week-long-period. We will utilise this opportunity to establish a project space that can be used to explore various ideas; creating solid possibilities within the public sphere.

2. A Long Story: A long atlas styled drawing constructed by semi-autonomous mechanical creatures.

3. Wall Map I: A collection of various maps joined together using a linking of natural contours to create an abstract re-hash of the world.
“The development of this project within the public realm represented CAAPO’s first attempt at executing a project of this nature. We were interested in opening up the usually studio-based
part of work development to public eye and discussion. It was interesting to chat with the braver members of the public who decided to engage in this process.
The public reaction that was received proved to be quite interesting. Unfortunately, there was not enough time to make more of this. Perhaps the attempt to create three resolved works was a little ambitious.
Having said this, there is something interesting about people feeling that they are watching something unfinished. This did inspire an uncomfortable feeling in some cases. CAAPO is interested in challenging peoples’ expectations of visiting a gallery space and what they expect to find there.” CAAPO

CAAPO intends to launch ‘An Incomplete History Of Mapping’ as an exhibition in 2012. We are still awaiting confirmation of a venue, so keep your eyes peeled! This event will include a smattering of CAAPO works alongside a number of exciting commissions from a variety of artists that are already amassing in the wings.

CAAPO are keen to create and promote ambitious works that push the boundaries of their subject matter. The organisation is focussed on producing events that showcase works with real international perspective and are committed to providing quality opportunities for artists and curators to produce new work and to develop their professional experience and skills through involvement in our projects.

CAAPO are artists and are actively engaged in creative practice: In 2010, CAAPO were commissioned to produce a residency and exhibition for the Official Liverpool Biennial Programme. This project was entitled ‘An Incomplete History of Mapping’.

CAAPO actively promotes critical discourse and cultural exchange: In 2011, CAAPO re-ignited the ‘Room For Discussion’ Series at Milkwood Gallery, Cardiff. This provides a chance for arts professionals, working in Wales, to come and discuss methods of practice and critical concerns. The first of this series included a conversation on ‘public art’ with Polish-Italian artist Christian Costa. CAAPO specialises in forming relationships with artists and organisations working outside of Wales, promoting cultural osmosis and celebrating Welsh culture by looking outwards.

CAAPO is an art production organisation, based in Cardiff: The organisation was formed in May 2009 and is co-ordinated and directed by Brychan Tudor & Jamie Davies. They have a variety of fine art based experience; including successful solo practices and co-ordination/management roles in organisations such as Wolstenholme Projects and Art Art Art International Publication. CAAPO possess substantial technical experience and have a strong history of successful international art event production

Laurence Payot & Spazi Docili have been commissioned by CAAPO to carry out 'one-off' public art works in Cardiff City Centre. The exact nature of these works is still under development. CAAPO is extremely excited to see how the respective artists execute their plans in a city centre that will hustling and bustling with the exuberance of around 100,000 Welsh & French rugby fans.

Dystopia’s are frequently created as warnings, or as satires, showing current trends extrapolated to a nightmarish conclusion. The current international political landscape is littered with Orwellian references of dystopian ideology. It has become a time of ‘us and them’. Through this project we aim to highlight the relationship between past, present and future in the creation of dystopian narratives and their reference to the international political landscape.

The project will include a series of events at a variety of locations across Cardiff, showcasing new outstanding works by emerging and established, UK & International Artists. CAAPO will use a unique curatorial method or vehicle, to display the works in such a way as to intensify the project theme; developing the context and helping the viewer to establish a clearer understanding of the project’s theoretical content.

Doppelganger is a collection of new works by the artist Ben Langworthy. They represent the outcome of a three week research residency commissioned by CAAPO as part of the ‘Dystopia: Are We Nearly There Yet?’ series. Each work looks at a different tangent exploring the idea of dystopia; relating them specifically, to the context of Cardiff.

Doppelganger
Dystopias are usually built out of elements of shared personal and social experiences: Collected together and projected forward they form a future memory. Like myths and fables, dystopia’s are imagined scenarios set in real places; exaggerated versions of the everyday.

Doppelganger plays with this notion of a ‘future memory’; through an archival response that utilizes display cases in two separate locations. Each the opposite of the other, they present a collection of text and objects that pose a potential myth and an echo of a future memory. This ‘folly’ highlights the importance of language as a form of social and personal identity, something that has been used to control and invigorate various communities throughout history.

Attempts to walk in a straight line in the direction of the horizon
By its very nature, the notion of Dystopia is one that is always just out of reach. Reaching such an end point would assume a purely linear progression; it is the unreachable destination.

Us Watching You Watching Them
Visitors are invited to borrow a pair of binoculars as an apparatus to watch people in the city. However, as payment for this service they are required to take a picture of themselves to be ‘watched’ by other visitors to the gallery. Us Watching You Watching Them explores a potential inversion of the relationship between the ‘watched’ and the ‘watcher’: An issue often explored in dystopian literature.

Special thanks to Milkwood Gallery, Cardiff Market, National Museum of Wales & Chapter Arts for making this event possible.

Please join us for a low-key critical discussion on the importance of process in contemporary creative practice. Creatives of all varieties and levels are most welcome. The wonderful people at Milkwood (www.milkwoodgallery.com) will provide their usual warm hospitality with a variety of ‘freshments available .

CAAPO has commissioned UK based artist Ben Langworthy (benlangworthy.co.uk) to carry out a 3 week research residency in Milkwood Gallery’s Basement Space. The results of this residency will be developed into a month long solo exhibition, which will open on Friday 4th November.

It’s not the getting there.... it’s the finding out!

This duel seminar event will create an opportunity for local creative professionals, practicing amateurs and students to get together and discuss the importance of process; both in general terms and in relation to Ben’s work. ‘Part 1 of 2’ will investigate Ben’s workings, initiatives and responses over the first two weeks of the residency period. The second part (17th November) will review the initial discussion and evaluate the cognitive progression of Ben’s research and eventual outcomes.

Many educational institutions are moving towards fine art programmes that place great emphasis on conceptual development as opposed to skill building and material led investigation. Is this a pattern that will lead to a separation between roles as artist and technician; between architect and builder? CAAPO is interested to hear what people think about this.

The event will be followed by an informal social event at the Albany Pub (5 mins walk from the gallery).
